Description

The Douglas County Coroner's Office is seeking qualified candidates for our Coroner Investigator position.  This is professional and technical work investigating deaths occurring within the jurisdiction of the Douglas County Coroner's office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only, and are not intended to be all-inclusive.)

  • Responds to scene of death. Examines bodies to determine identification, physical description, injuries, condition and placement. Analyzes information gathered by investigation and prepares investigative reports for determination of cause and manner of death.
  • Interviews family, friends, witnesses, professionals and other contacts associated with the deceased during the death investigation.
  • Obtains statements, documents and related factual evidence. Confers with medical, social services and law enforcement agencies related to the investigation.
  • Administers proper procedures for collection of personal property, medications and evidence.
  • Administers proper procedures for notifying next-of-kin and releasing personal property.
  • Transports the body to morgue.
  • Processes body; takes X-rays and photographs, and takes fingerprints.
  • Serves as the Pathology Assistant during autopsies.
  • Arranges for release of body to funeral home.
  • Prepares toxicological samples for transport to laboratory.
  • Answers questions from public, either in person or by telephone.
  • Maintains personal and departmental equipment in satisfactory condition.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Prepares and cleans morgue before and after autopsy; enters various data into computer database; takes photographs; collects and processes specimens; inventories and cleans property; releases personal property; keeps supplies stocked; assists with maintenance of office files; assists with CMS scanning; assists Office Manager with various reports and documents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized course work in police science and/or medicolegal investigations, and two years of related experience OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • College degree is preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general technical procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write concise and accurate reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must possess or obtain a Medicolegal Death Investigator certification within first year of employment.
  • Must possess a valid State of Colorado Driver's License.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Ability to obtain information and evidence by observation, record examination and interviews.
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate all information obtained during investigations.
  • Ability to interpret and comply with laws and regulations governing investigations.
  • Working knowledge of methods, procedures and techniques used in law enforcement investigations.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, physiology, and anatomy.
  • Ability to exercise mature judgment and react effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
  • Ability to drive County vehicles in adverse conditions.
  • Highly encouraged to excel in a field of forensic science.
