Description

This posting is for a position in the district Office of the Chief Medical Examiner located in Manassas, VA. It involves working a rotating schedule 40 hours per week which requires variable shift work to cover day and evening hours, weekdays, weekends and holidays, sometimes alone. Will require occasional travel throughout the surrounding counties to death scenes. Involves possible exposure to hazardous substances/dangerous materials. Responsibilities include investigating deaths which fall under Medical Examiner jurisdiction, gathering specific case data and information, heavy database entry, preparing and filing reports, document review, requesting reports, follow up phone calls, assuming custody of remains, assisting with the identification of remains, handling evidence and determining the necessity for autopsy or further examination at the district office. Knowledge of laws and standards of medical investigation, anatomy, medical terminology, forensic pathology, police and forensic science. Expected to assist with the many functions involved with handling the dead. May require climbing, crossing uneven terrain, or walking in muddy or rocky areas. May require travel to disaster areas and staying away from home for rotating periods of time.  
Related degree preferred. Advanced training/experience in forensic science or related field preferred.  
Registration from the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators required within two years of hire date. Selected candidate must pass a criminal background check prior to hire. Valid driver's license required.
