The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner – Tidewater (Eastern) District in Norfolk is seeking a full time Medicolegal Death Investigator. This position will work rotating shifts that include day, evening, overnights, weekends and holidays. This position is responsible for investigating deaths that fall under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Incumbent will be responsible for handling deaths reported via the telephone, facsimile machine, in person, etc., responding to death scenes, data collection, real time data base entry, preparing and filing reports, document review, handling evidence, moving remains, assisting with the identification of remains and determining the necessity for an autopsy or further examination at the district office. Ability to inspect bodies and obtain samples for study is required. Involves possible exposure to hazardous substances/dangerous materials.

This position requires a knowledge of laws and standards of medical investigation, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, forensic pathology, police and forensic science and pharmacology. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must have strong keyboarding and typing skills allowing for real time, quick and accurate data entry of large amounts of case information into a database. Must be able to compose documents, use a digital camera and print digital photographs
